SI4MS: Sensor Intelligence for Mobility Systems

Goal of the project
In the SI4MS project, a next step towards an integrated architecture for ITS applications will be made, by developing solutions for cooperative driving, and for dynamic traffic information and distributed traffic management, based on a common ICT and sensor network architecture. These solutions will be compared to current state of the art via evaluations of research implementations and simulations of the key concepts. An outline for the common architecture will be developed during the project, such that it can be extended in future projects to include also other types of applications.

More specifically, SI4MS has the following objectives:
• System architecture: to develop a ICT and sensor network architecture in support of Mobility. This architecture includes heterogeneous networks, sensors and services. It must maintain integrity under high dynamics and it should be scalable from local systems to global ones.
• Networking: to develop methods, protocols and techniques to make the heterogeneous sensor network reliable and real-time.
• Adaptive systems: to develop methods and techniques to optimize system performance under changing conditions and changing information needs.
• Distributed data processing: to develop methods and techniques to reliably collect sensor data and to capture the context of a situation by means of data filtering and fusion. The second objective here is to develop methods to analyze the context and assess the situation.

Results
The results mentioned in the project proposal are:
• 3 scientific papers, from WP1, 2, and 3
• 3 articles in popular magazines or conference contributions, from WP1, 2, and 3
• 4 workshops for the community organized the SIG and IIP’s
• 1 public seminar or session at a large conference
• Contribution in 2 project proposals for follow up projects

The steering group (SG) is formed by the authorative representatives of the partners: Paul Potters (Connekt), Jan Burgmeijer (TNO), Jan Maas (Sensor Universe), Bart van Arem (TUD) and Paul Havinga (UT). The project leader acts as secretary of the SG.
